PROPOSAL WRITING FOR
RESEARCH GRANTS FUNDING

Generally, research grants in universities and other higher education institutions are financial aids that are specifically provided to individuals, organizations, or institutions to support their research activities. Most governments in the developed and developing world recognise that these grants are essential in driving scientific, social, and economic development of their nation and indeed the global economy. However, experience show that many researchers, particularly young and upcoming ones in both the developed and developing economies, face challenges in securing research grants. It therefore goes without saying that for many, grant writing takes a lifetime to master because the terms and conditions of the grants funding agencies themselves continue to change. This means that each successful grant proposal requires customization with regard to context and audience

FINDING AND ASSESSING OPPORTUNITIES

Finding and evaluating grant opportunities is made easier with the guidance and assistance of the Grant Writing and Funding (GWF) Workshop. It takes time to put up a grant application. Consequently, applying to the appropriate opportunities rather than pursuing every one that arises is one of the fundamental principles of funding success. Within the GWF, we address various forms of funding opportunities, where to look for chances of high caliber, how to interpret a call for proposals, and how to determine whether our research projects are a good fit. We will also go over background information on financing possibilities, which includes analyzing the support portfolio that a funder currently has. The first step in figuring out what the funder really needs and wants is evaluating funding opportunities.

CRAFTING GRANT PROPOSALS

A particular genre of research writing with particular requirements is grant writing. We look at various grant application evaluation rubrics during the program and talk about how the assessment criteria should influence how we approach the grant proposal. Both standard and unique grant proposal templates are covered by the program. Throughout the program, we teach participants how to go above and above the requirements for every component of a grant submission, including the framework, work plan, original contribution, social effect, and public participation.

ENGAGEMENT WITH FUNDING STAKEHOLDERS

Most of the time, it can be advantageous to get in touch with pertinent groups and people before submitting a grant application. Sometimes this happens directly by contacting the appropriate stakeholders, and other times it happens indirectly through our past research and partnerships. The program offers methods for deliberately interacting with stakeholders so that it is more likely and reliable to mobilize resources and support.

RESEARCH WRITING

Grant writers must present their work in a way that is understandable to reviewers both inside and outside of their field of expertise, while also highlighting the expected impact of their work. Applications and calls for proposals are frequently worded so broadly that your idea may be reviewed by non-experts. Throughout the curriculum, we practice striking a balance between accessibility and our in-depth subject expertise.

TRANSPARENT BUDGETING

The financial request is a substantial component of every grant proposal or application, and this program explains how to create budgets that will fairly support the research project from beginning to end as well as how to support budgetary items in funding proposals.

PERSONAL MENTORSHIP

In addition to providing a framework for international networking and global research partnerships, the program offers mentoring and a personalized contact with
professors. Participants will also have access to the Leaders of Africa Institute’s professional network.
